One Color, Two Color, Full Color
Project
Objective:
To learn the
possibilities for creating effective designs under the constraints of limited
color and/or graphic elements
• Format: 11” x 17” vertical
• Application: InDesign
• Text: From Wikipedia or
other source
Project:
• Choose a capital Greek
letterform.
Base your choice purely on your appreciation of the form.
• Research the Letter. Find
out about its physical qualities, origins and symbolic associations. This
information will be the text you use for this project.
Elements:
• One instance of the Greek
letterform
• Text
• Color
• Space
Design
Solutions:
You will create three
different design solutions:
1. One Color: Choose a PMS
color that will allow you readability and possibilities for creating tints
2. Two-Color: Choose a 2 PMS
color that will allow you readability and possibilities for creating mixed
tints
3. Full Color / 4 Color
Process: create a triadic color palette that will allow you readability and
possibilities for multiple mixed ink combinations*
Hmmm…
This one is tricky. Is it 4 colors or 3? What is a triadic color palette? What
is 4 Color process?
Creating Color Swatches in InDesign - Step-by-Step Directions:
Choose a triadic
color scheme either by sampling from an image of a color wheel as I
demonstrated in class or choose the colors you want from the color spectrum in
the “Color” panel (not the swatches panel).
After you have chosen your three colors. Select all three
new swatches and in the dropdown menu, choose
“Swatch Options”. Change “Process” to “Spot”.
To create a “Mixed
Ink Group” from the three spot colors, go to the dropdown menu in the
swatches panel and choose “New Mixed Ink Group”. When the dialog box opens
click to choose the three spot colors. Then enter values for “Initial”,
“Repeat” and “Increment” in each. A good combination to start with is (20% - 3
– 20%)
Once you have all the new mixed inks in your swatches panel,
you’ll want to convert all the new mixed
ink spot swatches back to CMYK.
The easy way to do this is to select the Mixed Ink Group
icon in the swatches panel. (Its a white swatch with a + sign next to a stamp
(?) icon.)
Once you've selected just that swatch, go to the dropdown
menu and choose “Swatch Options.” When the dialog box opens, check “Convert Mixed Ink Swatches to Process”
and click OK. All the spot colors of mixed inks will now be converted to CMYK
mixes.
